Where are you from?
A place where time flows slowly, people carefully avoid the spasmodic search for the perfection which scans the days of the rest of the World. Instead, they prefer tasting their life as it is.
Up to the point that this place seems to lie outside of time itself, in a sort of parallel dimension. The place is Lago, Calabria in the South of Italy. It’s in sunny and warm, both in climate and in human touch.
What did you do before joining Natural Cycles?
I started my career at CERN, which is probably the place with the highest concentration of brilliant minds in the world. The air that you breathe there is food for the mind. It’s hard to find a better environment where to start.
But despite of this, I see the work in academia like childhood: it’s wonderful while it lasts, but it has to end at some point. So I deepened my knowledge in Machine Learning, and I started to work as consultant in that field.
Tell us about your work at Natural Cycles.
I’m in the Medical Product Team. Our goal is to improve Natural Cycles from a medical point of view by adding new features and continuously improving the existing ones. So the hundreds of thousands of women that use Natural Cycles each day can have a product that can stay with them during their reproductive life.
We are the pioneers of a new frontier: Big Data in the medical sector. Today we hold in our hands a huge amount of data and the tools that allow us to analyse and squeeze out large amounts of useful information. Thanks to this we can forge features that, until recently were impossible and sometimes even unthinkable, to get. Even just figuring this out is exciting, so I will let you imagine how satisfying it is when at the end of our efforts we get to the point that we can detect Hypothyroidism just looking at temperature, for example.
This excitement drives our team. Because without inspiration, work is just a job.
Why Natural Cycles?
Among the leading means that allows humanity to elevate from simple living beings to civilized ones, there are two which I care a lot: Knowledge and Health. Natural Cycles aims to improve both, together. It’s so easy to get seduced!
What has been your favorite project so far at Natural Cycles?
I developed a semi-supervised model with the goal to understand the reasons why some of our users leave us. The description in English is simple, but the effort to getting something other than banal answers and in a shape that enable us to act efficiently on the results, was definitely not!
It's one of the cases I mentioned earlier: using cutting-edge technology mixed in new ways, to obtain something otherwise impossible. With the gathered information we could further improve Natural Cycles, and thereby accomplish our mission. I’m quite proud of it.
What’s the one thing you’ve learned during your time at Natural Cycles?
To paraphrase a wise man, I keep learning that I still have so much to learn.
Favorite lunch discussion?
I see lunch as a time for socialization. It’s much more than feeding for a survival need.
I like to discuss politics and society. It’s interesting to see how people have such different opinions on those subject. Through their vision of society, you can understand a lot about a person.
What’s your go to-place to eat in Geneva?
Well, my origins set the bar quite high in regards to food. Geneva is great for many things, but it’s not the best place in the world when it comes to restaurants, even the Italian ones. So I would have to say: my home! Wanna join?
What do you do outside of work?
Since last year, I’m investing my time outside of the workplace on shaping the future, I try to raise my daughter the best I can! And in few months my investments will double ;)
